Mercury Reduction Projects

NEWMOA coordinates a variety of regional projects that promote reduction of mercury use in products and the proper collection and recycling of products that contain mercury. The Association's current projects focus on the following:

  • Promotion of the recycling of light bulbs (often called lamps) that contain mercury, such as linear fluorescent and compact fluorescent lamps;

  • Helping household hazardous waste management programs and others identify legacy products that contain mercury or mercury-added components.

  • Reducing and eliminating the use of mercury and mercury-added products in schools and cleaning out the existing inventory of elemental mercury, mercury compounds, and a wide variety of mercury-added products; and

  • Promoting the sharing of information on experiences of state and local governments with projects to promote the reduction or collection/recycling of mercury-added products.
