Each year, over 40 million tires are discarded in the NEWMOA states. NEWMOA determined the interstate flow and current management facilities and methods for these waste tires. NEWMOA prepared a report that examined data from 2000, and briefly discussed alternative uses for waste tires and management of waste tire piles. NEWMOA also researched feasible alternative uses for waste tires in civil engineering projects, such as drainage layers at landfills, lightweight fill in road construction, septic tank leach fields, and playground surfaces, and held two meetings in 2002 for state staff to learn more about them.
